Micafungin is a semisynthetic echinocandin-class antifungal active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is derived through chemical modification of a fermentation product of Coleophoma empetri and acts by inhibiting 1,3-beta-D-glucan synthase, an enzyme required for synthesis of an essential component of the fungal cell wall. This mechanism makes Micafungin particularly useful against susceptible Candida and Aspergillus species.
Micafungin is generally used in pharmaceutical formulations as Micafungin Sodium, the monosodium salt of Micafungin. It is administered intravenously and is used for the treatment of candidemia, acute disseminated candidiasis, Candida peritonitis and abscesses, esophageal candidiasis, and prophylaxis against Candida infections in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation.
