Polypodium leucotomos is a tropical fern native to Central and South America. Its standardized leaf extract is rich in naturally occurring phenolic compounds and is primarily studied for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and photoprotective properties.
Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE) has been investigated as an oral and topical adjunct for protection against UV-induced skin damage, including erythema, oxidative stress and certain pigmentary and photosensitivity-related conditions.
The extract contains phenolic compounds such as ferulic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid and chlorogenic acids, which contribute to its antioxidant activity.
