Streptococcus salivarius K12 is a specific probiotic strain of Streptococcus salivarius associated with the normal human oral microbiota. The strain was isolated from the saliva of a healthy child and deposited with the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) as ATCC BAA-1024. It is also deposited with the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures as DSM 13084.
BLIS K12® is the commercial designation associated with this strain. It is supplied as a freeze-dried microbial ingredient following controlled fermentation and stabilization. The TGA compositional guideline describes the ingredient as a freeze-dried culture mixed with a lyoprotectant and milled into powder.
The TGA specification requires a viable count of more than 1 × 10¹¹ CFU/g for the ingredient. FDA GRAS Notice 591 describes food uses for S. salivarius K12 at levels up to 20 mg per serving, providing a minimum of 2 × 10⁹ CFU per serving.
